Weighing The Benefits Of Medical EMR Software

Medical EMR software refers to a type of medical record that is recorded in a digital format. This means that instead of using old fashioned notes and paper files, they store all the information on their computer of handheld electronic device such as a PDA or Blackberry. There are some who refer to this type of file as an EMR, or electronic health record. However in most field, the two phrases essentially mean the same thing. Medical EMR software is used by health professionals and doctors alike. There are also some individuals who use medical EMR software to keep track of information pertaining to their medical practice such as their budget. Medical EMR software has yet to catch on in the United States as quickly as some people originally thought. They assumed that because it made the lives of doctors and medical professionals easier, it would be a highly popular idea. Unfortunately a large percentage of doctors working in the US are hesitant to use these products. They are highly concerned with patients rights, and unwilling to do anything to compromise those rights. Some doctors view medical EMR software as a violation of their patients" rights, and also a violation of the Hippocratic oath. They have no way of completely protecting these records and are therefore unwilling to switch from the standard way of record keeping. These doctors realize that it is quite easy to steal the records off of their computer, and that even their nurses can print off the information without a second thought. Doctors are not the only ones to reject the new medical EMR software; hospitals are also beginning to turn away from this new type of technology. It has been estimated that only around 10% of all hospitals and large practices use medical EMR software. These same estimates claim that only 16% of all doctors use this type of product in their office or practice. Considering that many doctors can only devote a small percentage of their annual revenue towards technology and upgrades, this shouldn"t be surprising. The main reason that doctors and hospitals do not want to switch to medical EMR software is because it can be quite expensive. A large portion of their income and revenue is devoted towards paying their own bills, such as rent, electricity, and medical supplies. They must also pay their staff for working, and advertise their services. This leaves very little money left over for luxury items such as upgrading their entire system. Medical EMR software is a completely new field and a new type of technology. Though it has been shown to work quite well, there are still a large number of people who have yet to take the plunge. It will be interesting to see how things change over the next few years.
